Peugeot Partner Electric - driving CHAdeMO to the WAVE

CHAdeMO Association itself does not own EVs nor charging stations and therefore for events such as rallies we have to rely on the good heart of our members to lend us what we need, i.e. vehicles and charging stations. This time, our benefactors come from Switzerland. Peugeot Swiss is lending us their electric Partner and EVTEC is providing their portable charger.

Are you wondering what is it like, this new electric Partner?  Here are the basic details:

At the WAVE the spacious Partner will transport not only the CHAdeMO WAVE team and their luggage, but also the portable CHAdeMO charger so the big trunk will serve us well. European-made (produced in Vigo, Spain),

It can have a CHAdeMO charging as an option and can also be charged at home at a wallbox or with a cable for  ocasional charging using a normal socket.

The WAVE - what is it?

The WAVE rally is Europe’s most widely known EV rally.  Led by Louis Palmer, a seasoned EV driver who has once circumnavigated the globe in a solar-powered vehicle, it has been going on since 2011 and is now into its 3rd edition. This 8-days long event is open only to 100% electric vehicles (or hybrids that, for the duration of the rally, have their petrol tank sealed and thus unusable). About 70 teams from all over Europe have signed up to participate in this year’s WAVE adventure, ready to cover 1800km across Germany, Austria and Switzerland and to help the rally realize its 5 principles:
  • to do everything for the benefit of e-mobility
  • to keep up the spirit of a people's movement
  • to develop the WAVE further as an instrument to support electric mobility
  • to manage the WAVE in a climate neutral way and to support the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energies
  • to offer each participant a unique experience
The three first points are rather obvious and do not need the explanation. 4th point is an interesting one. In practical terms, it means every team purchases a ‘green electricity allowance’ in kW which amounts to the electricity estimated to be used during the rally. Thus, EV driving in the WAVE means fully realizing the environmental benefits of electric mobility. And the last point – well, one only needs to look at the magnificent spots that the rally goes through (SONNENALP RESORT &
OFTERSCHWANG, Insel Mainau,
OBERÄGERI, SCHULHAUS, Goms, INTERLAKEN - just to name a few) to see what a unique experience for the participants that is.

You can check out the full route here.  CHAdeMO team is definitely looking forward to the adventure :)

We are joining the WAVE!

EV rallies and fast charging go very well together. The first brings with it many cars that are energy-thirsty and the second enables those cars to charge in a short time, reducing the wating time and number of charge points needed.

WAVE will not be our first rally - we have already had a EV rally baptism of fire last year, where CHAdeMO-coloured team participated in the Tour Poitou Charentes in the South West of France. Covering 350km as part of the rally and 650km from Rennes to the start of the rally and back was a real challenge (read more here), but a very enjoyable one. It gave us the taste of what an EV rally brings and also made us realise the value of going out to the world, the EV drivers and users of CHAdeMO, sharing the range anxiety (sometimes), the joy of easy charing (most of the time) and the pleasure of electric drive (always).

WAVE, the most famous EV rally in Europe and the longest running was a natural choice for us for the next rally adventure.Since the Association does not own EVs, nor charging stations, we shall rely on good hearts of our members to lend us what we need. With EVTEC providing us with one of their portable 22kW charger and Peugeot Suisse we are well set already.

The team will be 50% the same as for the Tour Poitou Charentes but ... more on that in the next post!
