Wave Day 3

Oh what a day. The day before we arrived in Garching, and were to be hosted by the Technical University of Munich and the city of Garching.the day started well. Before we even had breakfast, our charger was already in motion charging an EV that desperately needed some juice. The Leaf that a day earlier made 212km on a single charge as part of the range competition was completely empty  because of an overnight electricity problem. We were happy to provide the charge.

Then, another team, Watt-Wrum, and their Leaf in need came to us to ask for a charge. We were happy to oblige.

After, we left for Schwangau, a Bavarian City famous for its castle. As the distance was 131 km we opted for charging mid way, at Vitali's (one of Wave staff) workshop.

We only did a 15min to up but it gave us a peace of mind and made for an easy trip. Once arrived in Schwangau we still had about 30km of range. And that's were the adventures started. Even before our arrival we were called upon by one of the teams asking for a charge.
And the moment we arrived we were greeted by a group of people all wanting CHAdeMO.

We made a list of 9 (!) cars that established priority and gave 20 min of CHAdeMO charge to each team. Half way through the charging, we were faced with a technical issue with a connector. Luckily, we were surrounded by technology specialists and e-mobility DIY experts, the problem was very quickly resolved and the charger was back to work.

All in all we charged 7 cars, including our own. The appreciation was so big, that we even got flowers from one of the teams.

We were so busy running the charging that we had no time to Tweet about it! And as CHAdeMO charger carriers we were the last ones to depart to Ofterschwang.
3km from the final destination we came to a halt - a road was closed for reparations and we had to find a way round it. We asked local firemen for help.

In the end it was nit the firemen but our own GPS that saved us. We did have to add 8km to the total and were happy that we still had it in the battery! On the way to the hotel we gathered another 2 Wave. Cars and passed one that had to stop at a local farm to get some power, because it was unable to do the additional 8km. We arrived at 21:30 with 19km of autonomy left, ate (other teams made sure there is food for us) and went to bed. It was a very adventurous day indeed.
What will today bring?

Wave Day 2 - report

Today started very peacefully, not only because of the blue sky. The task of the day was to show how far we can go on a single charge. For every part completed without a charge we were to get 2 points. First part was easy, 77km, then after it was getting difficult.59km, 39km and 37km, making alltogether 212km. We decided to maybe aim for 4 points (since 6, 175km, was a priori out of our reach), depending on how we get along with the first part. We started with a modest speed of 50km/h, but nevertheless with a lot of apprehension, or a planned range anxiety (is it ok? is it too fast? is it too slow?). The difficulties that we had to surmount were not only hills of Schwartzwald, but also a 120km 'said' range as well as a rather heavily loaded car: 2 people, 65kg portable fast charger, 50kg of our own luggage + 20kg of other participants' luggage.Luckily for us, after about 20-30km we ran into a team Frank und Frank (right side of the photo):

who were driving at 30km per hour, clearly out of choice and not because their car couldn't go faster. And we though - well, now that's an idea. OK, this is not something that you do in a real life but this a competition, i.e. special circumtances, hence special rules apply. And so we did apply this rule, drastically reducing our speed.

And ... it worked. After having driven 77 km we still had 50% of the battery left. A quick coffee at a farm in Nordlingen

and we headed to Neuburg. The savings we made with the first part left us rather optimistic about our abilities to complete the task of getting 4 points.

And we were right. When arrived at Neuburg, we still had about 20% of the battery left, and that after having driven 136 km! We felt great and to celebrate our accomplishment we were greated with fanfare. Literally.

A local orchestra was there to play while EVs were arriving and parking. The mayor of the town organised a special event to celebrate the passing of the Wave and the car park around the local utility's office was full of locals wanting to see with their own eyes what EVs are like and speak with the people driving them.

As always, the 'eyes' of our Peugeot Partner were a big attraction.

Once arrived, we started Chademo charging

but after a little while the charging stopped, for no apparent reason... A helpful hand of 2 Wave technicians and 1 fuse box later our charger was back on again. First in the queue was a Wave service vehicle, who had errands to do and was in a rush.

then us and then a team Slovakia. Once charging and eating and talking with curious locals was done, we were off to another interim destination, Pfaffenhoffen.

With an almost full battery and only 39km to make we did not limit ourselves and enjoyed the electric drive to the full (within the speed limits of course!). The final destination for the day was Garching, where Technical University of Munich prepared charging for us and will be hosting us for breakfast tomorrow.

With a last fast charge of the day yesterday - saving Marie and Benoit and their Nissan LEAF from sleeping in their car after they arrived at the 'final' destination yesterday with 5km of range (they still had 30 km to make to get to their hotel) we really felt we are accomplishing our mission at the Wave. Although only used every now and there, it helps people in need get on the road faster and get on with their business. That feeling continued today as well. We fast charged ourselves, Wave's service team's iMiEV and an EV of the team Slovakia. And if there was a need, we could do much more. All this with one CHAdeMO charger. Imagine, if there were 1000s of them in each European country! With that optimistic thought, we go to bed!

Wave Day 1 - report

We knew day one was to be a big day weeks before it actually happened. Stuttgart was going to attempt to break a Guinness record for the biggest EV parade in the world and Wave teams were to form the core of it. We all gathered together by the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.

Once everyone was in place and following a couple of welcoming speeches we were all ready to go. A very impressive parade of (now we know) 507 electric vehicles traveled around the city and CHAdeMO's Peugeot Partner was among them.

Once the parade was finished we all got to a huge car park to build a ... Giant heart made from electric cars!

Feeling very proud, a CHAdeMO-coloured car participaded as a very base of the heart.

The parade and the heart were a great success. We not only beat the world record, but also built an amazing, electric heart. All this was filmed by a drone.
(See the drone right above the car).

After the successful parade we headed for  Schondorf, a birthplace of the inventor Gotlib Daimler, one of the founders of Daimler (car manufacturer). We fast charged our partner and provided a badly needed fast charge top up to 'Gotlib' team, that arrived at this interim destination with only 5km of range left (!).

We also learnt that our car is a big attraction not only because of it's special looks and a fast charger that it carries on board, but because of a boot that is unmatched in size by other EVs. And so it now serves as an emergency storage and baggage transporter, providing a much needed service to overloaded EVs of some Wavers.

A guided tour by town's very own impersonation of Gotlib Daimler (who very much enjoyed a CHAdeMO badge:) and a charge later, we were ready to take upon us the hilly part of Schwarzwald.

At 17:56 we arrived well and without any problems, having covered 75km and with 50% of the battery left, at Wolpertshausen, final destination for the day. Now we are resting and looking forward to tomorrow!

Getting ready for the first Wave 2014 briefing

We have started! Having picked up the car kindly provided to us by Peugeot Suisse in Schlieren, near Suisse-German border, we made our way to meet a couple of other Wave teams that were also travelling to the Wave's briefing point  in Bietigheim-Bissingen. We set out without any problems with a goal of covering  104 km. Since there were no fast chargers on the way we planned an overnight stop at Trossingen. We made it to the first destination without special adventures, albeit travelling at a very slow speed to make sure the battery lasts us for the whole stretch. Once arrived in Trosdimgen, a 22kw charge to 80% followed by an overnight  top up to 100% and we were ready to go again.

We braved our way, 133km between Trossingen and Bietigheim-Bissingen, with only one fast charge, put the car to charge, put the stickers on and now are waiting for the first briefing of the Wave 2014!

Charging the WAVE

Although not a supporting team, but an actual participant, CHAdeMO Team will have a supporting role to play during the WAVE. As a fast charging association should, we will be providing a charging assistance to the rally. Armed with an EVTEC portable charger we will fast charge ourselves (or rather, our Peugeot Partner Electric), supporting vehicles and, if the time allows, the vehicles of other participants over 2000km of the WAVE.

The 20kW power hidden in this innocent looking device provides for 80% of charge in less than 40 min and all it needs is an industrial CE plug (red with 5 pins) to work, thus it’s a practical solution for extending the range of our EV 100% electrically, especially when you need to be able to move it around and do not have a 50kW electricity connection. The 65 kg charger will travel in our booth and shall be taken out (in the spirit of collaboration, i.e. combining the muscle force of our team with that of others, or so we hope!) whenever possible, charging as many as possible.

The characteristics of the charger:

  • AC input voltage 400 VAC ±10% (nominal 400 VAC)
  • DC output voltage 250 - 420 VDC, current 0 A - 60 A
  • efficiency 95% at 50% load, 94% at 100% load
  • power factor >0,99 at >50% load
  • integrated Ground Fault Detection
  • residual current and over current circuit breaker
  • CHAdeMO protocol Rev 0.9

Proudly 100% ladies

CHAdeMO participation at the WAVE is unique - and not only because it is the first time that the association joins an international rally. It is also because CHAdeMO’s team is the first 100% ladies team that has ever joined the WAVE rally [according to the organizer]. Thus, not only will we be promoting fast charging, but also (and proudly) breaching male-female-mobility stereotypes.

The two ladies in question are members of the same family, with one joining as a CHAdeMO employee and the other as a volunteer. A seasoned driver of combustion engine cars Jola is combining forces with a slightly less seasoned, but nevertheless very enthusiastic electric car driver Natalia. Because France is the association’s European homeland, the team, although neither of the ladies is French, shall participate as a team from France.

The particular gender configuration of the team will of course impact our  EV’s decoration style. But that shall only be revealed at the rally. So join us at the WAVE or follow us on twitter or this blog to see for yourself when the moment comes!

Peugeot Partner Electric - driving CHAdeMO to the WAVE

CHAdeMO Association itself does not own EVs nor charging stations and therefore for events such as rallies we have to rely on the good heart of our members to lend us what we need, i.e. vehicles and charging stations. This time, our benefactors come from Switzerland. Peugeot Swiss is lending us their electric Partner and EVTEC is providing their portable charger.

Are you wondering what is it like, this new electric Partner?  Here are the basic details:
